Transport Chair vs. Wheelchair: Which Should You Buy?
A wheelchair and a transport chair look similar, but they answer different needs. The deciding question is simple: will the user move themselves, or will someone always push?
Self-propel wheelchair: the user drives
A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels with hand rims, so the person sitting in it can push themselves. Choose it when the user has the arm strength and the desire to be independent, even part of the time. The cost is weight: standard chairs run 35 to 40 lb (lighter aluminum models, 25 to 34 lb), which is a real lift into a trunk. See our top self-propel pick.
Transport chair: someone else pushes
A transport chair has four small wheels and is pushed by an attendant. Because it skips the big drive wheels, it’s lighter and folds smaller, often under 20 lb, which makes it far easier to travel with. The trade-off is that it cannot be self-propelled: the user depends on a helper. Ideal for appointments, airports, and long-walk outings. See our most portable pick.
How to decide
| If… | Choose |
|---|---|
| The user will push themselves, even sometimes | Self-propel wheelchair |
| A caregiver always pushes | Transport chair |
| You need the lightest, most packable option | Transport chair |
| The user wants independence and has arm strength | Self-propel wheelchair |
Some families own both: a wheelchair for home and a transport chair for travel. If you only buy one, let the “who pushes” answer decide.
A note on fit
Whichever you choose, seat width is the key spec. Measure the user hip to hip and add an inch or two. A chair that’s too narrow is uncomfortable; too wide and the user can’t reach the wheels or sit securely.

This is general information, not medical advice. A clinician or physical therapist can help confirm the right chair type, seat width, and any positioning needs.
